Sarawak Museum (Old Building), Kuching. Originally built in 1891 in the
style of Normandy town-house and was restored to
its current form in 1911.
Reputed to be the best museum in Southeast Asia. The building was especially
built to permanently housed and display local native arts and crafts and collection
of local animals as encouraged by the famous naturalist, Alfred Wallace, who
was then collecting specimens in the country.
Today it is used as the museum to exhibit the natural history collection
and specimens of Sarawak fauna, reptiles, mammals, birds, etc all expertly
prepared and mounted for display.
The first floor displays the collection of Borneo ethnography, prehistoric
artefacts, historical documents, etc.

Sarawak Museum (Dewan T.A.R), Kuching. The building was Sarawak Legislative
Assembly Hall from 1973 to 1975. It was converted into a museum exhibition in
1982.
Named after the second Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Abdul Razak, the new
wings of Sarawak Museum was open to public since 1983.
Now the museum is used mainly for exhibitions organized by the Museum Department
and other agencies.
The Museum Shoppe is located at the ground floor and sells a wide variety of
souvenirs, T-shirt, books, etc.

Islamic Museum, Kuching. The building was initially built as
the James Brooke Malay College in 1930 and was later known as Madrasah
Melayu Sarawak. The building was converted into an Islamic Museum in 1992.
This is the first Islamic Museum in Southeast Asia and there are seven
galleries depicting pictures of the rich historical heritage and culture of
the Muslim community in Sarawak and throughout Borneo and the Malay-Indonesia
Archipelago - History of Islam in Sarawak; Islamic Architecture; Science,
Technology, Economics, Education and Literature; Music; Costumes and Personal
Ornaments; Weaponry; Decorative Arts and Domestic Utensils; and the Holy
Quran Collection.

Chinese History Museum, Kuching. The building was built in 1912
and used as a court by the Chinese community until 1921. In 1930 it became
the premise for the Chinese Chamber of Commerce. It became a Chinese History
museum in 1993.
The Chinese History Museum traces the history of the Chinese community in
Sarawak. Exhibits include the early trade routes, initial migration from
various regions of China, geographical distribution of early pioneers,
traditional trading activities, the formation of trade and community
associations, political history and the involvement of the Chinese
community in modern and multi-racial Sarawak.

Niah Archaeology Museum, Miri. Situated near the archaeology sites of the

Limbang Regional Museum, Limbang. The museum building was an old fort
built in 1897. It was converted into a museum in 1994. |

Baram Regional Museum, Limbang. The building was rebuilt in 1994 on the
same spot as the old Fort Hose which was built in 1989. Unfortunately,
Fort Hose was burnt down in 1994.

Textile and Costume Museum, Kuching. The building was built as a medical center in
1907 and converted into a museum recently.
Housed in the Pavilion, a 3-storey rectangular building whose architecture is a
mixture of the late English Renaissance and English colonial design. It has
four galleries featuring raw materials, weaving, textiles motifs and
accessories and bridal wears. The exhibition flow follows the process of
making a textile which starts with the raw material and through the weaving
stages and ends up with the finished products. This is an interesting
museum for those wanting to know a bit more on the textiles of the
indigenous people from bark cloth to the Pua Kumbu.

Cat Museum, Kuching. A unique museum dedicated for the cat. A must visit
for cat lovers.
If you love felines, do not miss the Cat Museum in Kuching which is the
world's first museum devoted to cats. It is located on top of a hill called
Bukit Siol. There are four main galleries having more than 2,000 cat artefacts
and memorabilia from all over the world. One of its fascinating display is a
mummified cat discovered Egypt sometimes between 3000BC - 3500BC. Discover
for yourself the extraordinary world of cats.

Timber Museum, Kuching. Showcases the unique composition of Sarawak's
forest resources and its growing timber industry. The museum is situated
in Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation building (Wisma Sumber
Alam) in Petra Jaya. There are various section each of which is related
to history and development of the local timber industry. Exhibits include
Forest and Land use, Evolution of the Timber Industry and Traditonal
Wood items, etc.

Pua Kumbu Museum, Kuching. This musuem is managed by a private
foundation and has excellent collection of Iban Pua Kumbu textiles, antique
as well as exquisite Iban silverware and jewellery. Visitors will also
have a chance to see the weavers displaying their skills.

Timber Product and Bamboo Museum, Kuching. Showcases the various
species of timber (82 species) found in Sarawak and also the collection bamboo
products. Located in Sama Jaya Nature Reserve in Stutong, the museum is only
15 minutes drive from the city centre.

Forest Biology Museum, Kuching. This museum is also located at
Sama Jaya Forest Reserve, displays various preserved insect species,
mushrooms, algae, plants with ethno botanical uses and other small
organisms that are found in the rainforest, and description of its
vital role that each play in the ecology of our forests and the lives
of the people who live amongst them
