Sabah

Sabah doesn't have super huge caves like neighbouring Sarawak but one site that has considerable historical depth are the Gomantong Caves, South West of Sandakan.

For centuries, birds nest harvested here formed an important source of supplies to China where it has been and still is, a prized delicacy. A narrow tributary of the Kinabatangan River named Menangol was the only way to reach it in the past but now it can be reached by road.

It has two cave complexes; one, the more accessible Simud Hitam, which soars to 90 meters high, produces less valuable "black" nests - hardened swiftlet saliva mixed with feathers. The bigger complex, Simud Puteh, is harder to reach but produces white nests which can fetch a whopping USD500 per kilo.

Meanwhile, at Lahad Datu, there is also a cave complexes called "Madai Caves". Lahad Datu is 6-hours drive or 40-minutes flight from Kota Kinabalu. From Sandakan, it takes about 2 1/2 hours by road.
