The Dayak tribe of Borneo, live traditionally in buildings known as a longhouse,
"rumah panjang" in Malay, "rumah panjai" in Iban. Common to most of these is that they are built raised off the ground on stilts
and are divided into a more or less public area along one side and a row of private living quarters lined
along the other side. This seems to have been the way of building best accustomed to life in the jungle
in the past, as otherwise hardly related people have come to build their dwellings in similar ways.

Borneo has symbolized the edge of the Earth at least since Egyptian astronomer
Ptolemy included the island in his 150 b.c. Guide to Geography. Some 2,000 years later,
it's still hard to find a place further out there than Sabah, Borneo's northern edge.
There, at Sukau Rainforest Lodge, guests can witness the island's exotic jungle
creatures—specimens like the rare hairy-nosed otter and the endangered orangutan.
The lodge's 1,500-foot-long (457-meter) boardwalk (pictured) connects private chalets
and includes built-in elephant passes that grant migrating pachyderms free range
through the grounds.

![]() "Survivor Island"
|
Pulau Tiga is the largest of the three islands
that make up Pulau Tiga Park, with Pulau Kalampunian Besar and Pulau
Kalampunian Damit. Its beautiful landscape and pristine natural environment
has attracted CBS TV Network of the USA to use this island as the main
location of the popular "Survivor" Programme, dubbing it the
"Survivor Island" which is the first of the series.
This island was formed through the eruption of several mud volcanoes. The last explosion happened in 1941 and since then the volcanoes have remained relatively passive although several small mud volcanoes spewing cool, mineral rich mud can still be found near the summit of the island. The notion that this mineral rich mud is good for your skin makes mud bathing a must-do activity in this island. The island's lush green forest serves as a soothing backdrop while the fine sand of its white beaches and the clear unpolluted water is a wonder for nature lovers. The coral reefs encircling the island invite many species of fish and other marine life to make it their home. Among the activities that can be done here include diving, non-motorised water sports, trekking, bird watching and mud bathing. |
